Welcome to Web Fundamentals! My name is Dr. Shannon Cotnam and I'll be your instructor for the course. I’m looking forward to working with you all. Let me take a moment to explain how the course will work, and what will be expected of you this semester.

The focus of this class is learning how to find and use the many tools that are available online. You'll also learn to contribute to the World Wide Web by creating web pages with the HTML markup language. It's easier than you think!

Since this is an online class, your textbooks will take the place of classroom lectures. I’ve taken care to chooses books and online resources which explain each concept and technique in simple language, and gives step-by-step instructions for using web tools and creating web sites. You'll need to purchase both textbooks. Here's the information on those:

" Discovering the Internet, Second Edition" Shelly Cashman
The ISBN is 978-1-4188-5990-9

"Web Site Design Made Easy, Second Edition". Dennis Gaskill
The ISBN is 0-89582-639-9

You'll need to download a few free software programs and you might want to get one of these:

Thumbdrive - With the cheapest storing about 100X as much data as a floppy disk, these items are invaluable for storing files for all your classes. Inexpensive and portable, they are also called Flash, USB, or Jump drives. Prices are based on storage capacity and start from $10 to $20. USB drive

The class is divided into two parts. During the first 8 weeks, we'll be working with your "Discovering the Internet" book. Each week you'll have 2-3 assignments:

  1. Read the chapter and complete one or two of the exercises at the end.

  2. Complete the online Chapter Quiz. You don't have to turn this in, but they will serve as great study guides for the mid-term exam.

  3. Discuss the current week's topic on the weekly discussion board - See how your Discussion Board grade is calculated under Course Documents.

  4. There will be a mid-term exam at the end of the 8 weeks, covering the material from the "Discovering the Internet" book.

The second half of the semester will be spent learning to use HTML to create web pages. You'll be working from your "Web Design Made Easy" text. Again, you'll have 2-3 assignments due each week.

  1. Read the assigned chapter and practice the tags you learn

  2. Work on a "Crystal Coast Web Site" project that you will build in weekly modules

  3. Discuss your progress, questions, and concerns on the discussion board

At the end of the semester, you will complete a final project: A 3 page website about a fictional (or real) business you'd like to own. Your final grade will be based on the following:

Discovering the Internet Assignments ..............................20%
Mid-Term Exam............................................................. 20%
HTML Assignments.......................................................20%
Final Project....................................................................20%
Discussion Board/Participation.....................................20%

Remember, this is a 4 contact hour course. That means you will be expected to spend a minimum of 4 hours per week working on class assignments, in addition to any "homework". Please be sure to set aside the appropriate amount of time each week and do not wait until the last minute to begin. Late work will not be accepted.

Please take a look around the site. You will find the syllabus, schedule, and late work policy under Course Information.

Your first assignment is due Friday, August 24th. It can be found under Assignments > Course Introduction.
